Matthias Racz was born in Berlin and began his musical training at the age of six; first on the piano, then on the bassoon. His mentors include; Fritz Finsch and Dag Jensen. He received third place in the International Bayreuth Music Competition ‘Pacem in Terris’ in 2000, and in 2002, he received first prize at the International Music Betting competition “Prague Spring” That same year, he won the International ARD Music Competition in Munich. Matthias Rácz made his debut as a soloist at the age of 15 with the Cologne Chamber Orchestra in the German television production “Young Artists on the podium”. He has appeared as soloist with: The Interlochen-World-Youth-Symphony Orchestra (Michigan/USA), The Ensemble Resonanz, The North German Philharmonic Orchestra Rostock, The Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, The Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, The German Symphony Orchestra Berlin and the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. Matthias is the artistic director for bassoon at “The Muri Competition” in Muri (Aargau/Switzerland). At the age of 21, he became principal bassoonist with the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne and since 2003, has been the principal bassoonist with The Tonhalle Orchestra Zürich and at The Lucerne Festival Orchestra under Riccardo Chailly. Matthias Rácz holds a professorship for bassoon at the Zürich University of the Arts.
