Oboist and Composer Laura Adkins has been an advocate of contemporary music for much of her professional career. She was recently awarded a scholarship to attend a competition residency at the Banff Center for the Arts with her duo partner, pianist, and composer Jonathan Hannau, which resulted in full-length, collaboratively composed concert program. While completing her Master’s in Performance at DePaul University, Laura wrote a thesis and presented accompanying lecture recitals entitled “A Study of Contemporary Oboe Techniques through Selected Repertoire”. In 2016, Laura attended the Darmstadt New Music Festival in Germany, which included intensive study with Peter Veale. As a freelance musician currently living in Chicago, Laura has performed with many local new music ensembles, including Ensemble Del Niente, and the Chicago Composers Orchestra. Laura has maintained an active and private teaching studio for over a decade, and has five years’ experience teaching in orchestral programs.
