The Breaking Winds Bassoon Quartet is a project by bassoonists Brittany Harrington-Smith, Yuki Katayama, Kara LaMoure, and Lauren Yu Ziemba. Known for their YouTube videos and stage antics, the BWBQ add theatrical elements of choreography, accessory instruments, props, and skits to their performances. Now entering their 10th season, the ensemble maintains a dynamic performance schedule, recent highlights including a tour of China, Hong Kong, and Japan, a performance last year at IDRS Granada, and an appearance at the 100th anniversary Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. They have performed as concerto soloists with the West Point Band, Eastman Wind Ensemble, and Northshore Concert Band. Advocates of creative music education, Breaking Winds have presented master classes at Southern Methodist University, Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra, and Sichuan Conservatory, and they have served as clinicians at music education conferences across the United States.
